Phil Parkinson made two changes in the lineup that started in their round clash against Port Vale. Max Cleworth and Harry Ashfield made way for Lewis Brunt, Jack Marriott as the Red Dragons took tp the field in a 3-5-2 formation. The visitors failed to create many goalscoring opportunities in the first half as Bolton were the more dominant side. Arthur Okonkwo made a couple of brilliant saves to make sure his team head into the break with a clean sheet in tact.

Bolton continued to dominate possession as the game resumed after half-time. With Wrexham failing to show fluidity on the pitch, Parkinson was forced to make four changes just past the hour mark. The changes surely rejuvenated the team as Andy Cannon finally broke the deadlock in the 70th minute with a brilliant long-range. The central midfielder picked up a pass from George Evans and fired it into the net from nearly 20 yards away.

Cannon's strike proved to be the decider as the Welsh side progressed to the semi-final of the EFL Trophy. They will now face Peterborough United, while Tom Brady's Birmingham City will take on Bradford City – Parkinson's former club – in the other semi-final.

Cannon, who had opened the scoring for his team in their previous fixture against Port Vale, proved to be the hero for Wrexham yet again as he scored the all-important winner kept the club's dream alive of reaching the EFL Trophy final at Wembley.

THE BIG LOSER

Bolton's attackers failed to capitalise on the goalscoring opportunities they got in the first 60 minutes of the game as they were looking the more dominant side. Okonkwo made a few quality saves, including keeping Josh Sheehan's brilliant shot away from goal at the stroke of half time.
