Aston Villa have struggled in the striking department this season so it is little surprise that some fans have been busy discussing the future of Scott Hogan, who has returned to goalscoring form.

The 27-year-old is on loan at fierce rivals Birmingham where he has excelled since joining in January with seven goals in eight league games, a return which has earned him the Championship Player of the Month award for February.

It is a big turnaround for Hogan who had struggled for goals in the last few years. A loan spell at Sheffield United last term only saw him score two goals in eight games, while he failed to score for the Villans in 2018/19.

In total his record for Villa is a measly 10 goals in 61 games, which explains why he is surplus to requirements, and that is perhaps why some supporters feel he doesn’t have a future at the club regardless of how well he is playing.

That view could be a little short-sighted, however, as Villa are in very real danger of getting relegated and playing in the Championship next season, where Hogan could prove an astute option if Dean Smith can start playing to his strengths.

That is key if the striker is ever going to be a success at Villa Park, as some fans point out. His recent form shows he is more than capable of being a danger in the Championship and that is perhaps why fans are willing to give him another chance.

Added to that, Villa’s strikers this season – Wesley Moraes, Mbwana Samatta and Jonathan Kodjia – have been far from successful this term with a combined six league goals, so there is little reason why Hogan shouldn’t be given another chance to prove himself.
